CPP Our Project

Can FIRST Lego League teams improve the quality of life for seniors by helping them continue to be independent, engaged, and connected in their communities?
The FLL Challenge has 3 parts - the Robot Game, the Project, and the Core Values.

The Robot Game and Project are what teams do, and the Core Values guide teams through the experience.

This year the team had to research a problem faced by seniors. We found that a lot of seniors have financial difficulties during retirement. Our research indicated that this is because most people do not start saving for retirement early enough and do not meet their retirement savings goal.  We came up with a 3 step solution to the problem and reviewed it with State Representative Pete Lund and Mary B. Johnston, Ph.D., Executive Director of Innovation, Federal and State Programs and Curriculum for Utica Community Schools.

Our solution is to:

  1. Educate in high schools about retirement saving; compound interest & the importance of starting to save for retirement early;
  2. Automatic enrollment to save 10% of income into a retirement saving program as soon as someone starts to work;
  3. Federal tax incentives for both the employees and employers to maintain 80% of employees saving 10% or more.
